World Premier

This is the premier of both my team's work for Video Production 1 class last semester. I directed, co-wrote, edited and co-shoot both the videos (more details on the videos youtube pages). I rather not over analyze and explain, just that the music video was long in production in my head even before the semester started =) Hope you enjoy them and please share with me what you think in the comments.

  2. The iPhone commercial concept was good but the directing in the beginning wasn't good enough.I feel the flow between shots wasn't good enough and take care the line crossing when the guy looks at himself in the mirror.
The usage of shaky camera movement and still camera movement is abit random, confuses me wondering wether you're trying to go for realism style shooting or not.

I think the music video was a little bit messy. I cant see the planning on the storyboard near the middle of the video.
Sorry to say this but I've seen other malaysian student do better at music videos.

Both the videos look very malaysian if u know what i mean...

Hope you dont take it offensively,
    Just my 2 cents

  5. Apart from the awkwardness of seeing Samuel as one of your main male lead, I see nothing bad at all for the music video. I've no comments for the iPhone commercial, cuz that commercial's concept is either you get it or don't.

For the music video, I don't get what's so wrong with it. For me, it was overall a good video. I have no experience in all the styles and shots for videos, but all I know, it matches the music. Imagine the same video but with a System Of A Down song. Kinda weird if you ask me. So, the music and the whole video got along smoothly, in my opinion, and that's one of the major good point from the video.

Not being some sarcastic person here or being offensive, but don't you think everyone has their own style of filming and shooting their productions Mr./Miss FV? What appeals to you might not appeal to the rest. And FYI, the music video does not look 'Malaysian' at all. What's random and confusing to you doesn't make it a bad video. So far, I think more people liked it more than hated it. And it's for the right reasons as well.

But anyways, kudos to you Josh for the video. But still, it's awkward seeing Sam in the music video, hahaha...

  6. I agree with you Lam, one man's bowl of rice may not necessarily be another man's dinner.

Of course there is no such thing as a flawless commercial/music video/film. Everyone will have their own concept on "perfection".

FV: I never knew there was such a thing as a "Malaysian" looking video. What defines a Malaysian video? Malaysians cast in the video? Or is it the locations? Or maybe it is the themes? It seems to me that you are more interested in imposing YOUR two cents of opinion, (which right at this moment, looks more than just 2 cents)

The video was not messy. There was a very simple and basic concept flowing through it from the start to the end. I got it; the friend who was sitting next to me got it. And I am certain others understood the story line/theme of the music video.

And FV, sorry to say this but if you spent about 20 lines criticizing something, the least you could do is write in a more coherent and grammatically proper form.

Hope you aren't offended by this; it's just my two cents on this.

And here is a link on how to criticize (...and still be nice)

  7. Haha like I said its just my 2 cents. I wont take it seriously man.
But like u said, " everyone has their own style of filming and shooting their productions "
People use this alot and I cant disagree with it. But that doesnt mean it can always be used to defend . Everyone has their own style but doesnt mean everyone can execute the style beautifully.

I cant explain much in details about 'malaysian' term that I used.
I guess its a feeling that I have whenever i watch videos. For example when u watch hollywood movies or bollywood movies, you can guess its done by them.
    Same goes to Japan movies.
There is a style that they use. You will understand if you watched and studied them enough.

And no the concept did not confuse me. Its the shooting style and the directing that confused me. The camera language that he use was inappropriate.
and maybe i didn't make it clear enough in my previous comment. I did not get confused with the story/concept.

"Imagine the same video but with a System Of A Down song. Kinda weird if you ask me"
That is the basic things to consider. The continuity between shots, the flow, the editing and the planning of the storyboard determines how smooth the video is.

" So far, I think more people liked it more than hated it."
You're making conclusions too early. Im not saying that people would hate it but im sure that not many people would like. They would most probably just be "ok" with it.
Dont believe me? advertise it on youtube and you'll see for yourself.

Btw I'm comparing this to professional works out there that amazes me. Because only by doing that you'll be able find the mistakes.

Last but not least, it seems you're offended chris_devils. My c & c are the one that matters, my grammar don't. At least its understandable.

Giving critic doesnt mean I hate it. C&c's are better than compliments/praises because then mistakes and opinions can be pointed out.
The reason I don't praise is because everyone else did.

  10. To Mr. FV

Yes, people do use that "everyone-has-their-own style" thing a lot. Why? Because it is true. We aren't defending him, we are stating the obvious. Personally, I hate country music, and think that it is worst than Britney Spears after 3 bottles of cheap beer. The beauty of living with 6 billion other people is that we have 6 billion different mindsets.

Since, you can't explain much on the whole "Malaysian" concept, than why even bring it up? A man's theory is only as good as his ability to convey it.

Thirdly, of course the level of your grammar matters. If you demand more from your peers' work, it is only fair that you keep up to that standard, at the very least. Right?

And since it wasn't clear exactly on what you were confused about when you used the word "messy", that is further evidence that you should improve on the delivery of your thoughts; hence, by improving your grammar and perhaps by working on the coherence of your writing.

Finally, on the topic of compliment versus criticizing: my mama always said, "if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all".

    P.S. to Joshua
Sorry about this whole rant. Delete this comment if you want. I don't mean to be a jerk here, but you know how I get when I encounter a certain type of individual. At least I am not reacting like I used to when we were in high school. LOL .

  11. To joyce, My identity doesnt matter. You can call me a coward for not showing myself but talking this much but i dont care. I'm only here to help comment.
Joshua did say comment on the video so i did.

    To chris_devil
It looks like u dont get what i explained in my previous comment. Gosh it must be my grammar. Sorry that you couldn't understand me.
I disagree with every point u said though.
Why? please read back my previous comments. Btw im not here to flame or anything.

  12. LOOOOOL you got a whole debate going on here in your comments section. I kinda liked the ad more than the music video. Then again, probably its because I know Sam and seeing him like that... I just can't take it seriously, but its true. Maybe its too artistic for me :P
